Our Story
Preserving Peru's
Cultural Heritage
Based in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) area, Sumaj Tusuy—meaning "Beautiful Dance" in Quechua—is dedicated to sharing the rich tapestry of Peruvian dance traditions with communities across the region.
Our ensemble brings together trained dancers who have studied both in Peru and the United States, combining authentic technique with theatrical presentation to create captivating performances. We also offer workshops and master classes to share our culture with the community.
From the elegant courtship of the Marinera to the powerful rhythms of Festejo and the awe-inspiring Danza de Tijeras, each performance is a journey through Peru's diverse cultural landscape.

Coastal Peru
Marinera
Peru's elegant national dance, the Marinera is a romantic courtship dance featuring graceful movements, waving handkerchiefs, and intricate footwork. Originating from coastal Peru, it represents the art of elegant seduction and is performed at celebrations throughout the country.
Andean Highlands
Huayno
A lively traditional folk dance from the Andean highlands, Huayno combines pre-Columbian rhythms with Spanish influences. Dancers wear colorful traditional clothing and perform energetic steps that celebrate community and Andean heritage.
Coastal Peru (Afro-Peruvian)
Festejo
A vibrant Afro-Peruvian dance characterized by its infectious rhythms and joyful energy. Festejo celebrates the African heritage in Peru with hip movements, quick footwork, and the accompaniment of cajón drums and guitars.
Ayacucho & Huancavelica
Danza de Tijeras
The spectacular 'Scissor Dance' is an athletic ritual dance from the Ayacucho and Huancavelica regions. Dancers compete performing increasingly difficult acrobatic movements while playing large scissors, believed to have spiritual significance.
Puno Region
Diablada
The dramatic 'Devil Dance' from the Puno region features elaborate devil masks and costumes in a choreographed battle between good and evil. This UNESCO-recognized dance is a highlight of the Candelaria Festival.
